Groove Number — Support

How swung is your track? Get the number — plus BPM, key, and four ways to see the beat.

Point Groove Number at a song and it tells you the one thing drum machines flatten and great players bend: the groove. 50% is dead straight, about 66% is full triplet swing, and most music that feels good lives in between.

Three ways to listen

• Open a file — drop in or pick an audio file (mp3, m4a, aac, wav, aiff, flac) on the Analyze tab.
• Record a clip — tap Record on Analyze; it listens and stops on its own once the groove is solid, then reads it.
• Live — the Live tab gives a running BPM + swing read of whatever is playing in the room, plus a dB level meter and a live spectrogram.

Reading the results

• Swing % — the hero number. 50% straight, ~66% full triplet.
• BPM — the detected tempo. Nudge it ±2, or tap the tempo, and the swing recomputes against the corrected grid.
• Key — with a confidence read and the runner-up key.
• Four views — Meter, Swing Grid (see the pocket), Spectrogram, and Chromagram.
• Groove → MIDI — export the groove as a MIDI clip, with the swing preserved in the note timing.

Tips & troubleshooting

The tempo or swing looks wrong

Swing and BPM are estimates. They're strongest on clear, steady grooves and harder on live, acoustic, or rubato material. If the BPM is off, use the ±2 nudge or tap the tempo to correct it — the swing updates against your corrected grid. Groove Number also shows its confidence, and reads “—” when there isn't a clear beat rather than inventing a number.

That means there was no clear beat to measure — silence, background noise, or non-rhythmic sound. Try a clearer section of the track or move the mic closer to the music.

Live listening

Record and Live use the microphone; allow microphone access when prompted. For the best read, keep the phone reasonably close to the source and let it listen for a few seconds so the tempo settles.
